Catch-up.

Category: Gaming

This segment of the news is a bit belated, but is an interesting musing anyhow.

Following the death of the HD-DVD format, Microsoft is now considering creating either a Blu-ray addition or a future SKU with a pre-integrated Blu-ray drive. The latter, of course, meaning that Sony would be making money off of every PS3 AND 360 that is sold. This is way more entertaining than it should be, to be perfectly honest.

Of course, even more ancient news is the Metal Gear Solid 4 80Gig bundle which will be replacing the previous MotorStorm 80Gig PS3 bundle. I didn’t know it was feasible to package in a Mature game with the system, but I suppose after further examination, that it was successful with the Halo series.

The new PSN update yesterday was dull at best, but it is a marked improvement over the week before. Giant Rock Band pack available, as well as a smaller Guitar Hero III pack, and the Rocketmen demo that I will likely never touch.

News on the frontier is that in-game messaging will finally be implemented come summer. Sadly, there is still no real news on when Home is slated to come (doubtful it will be ready this month as they had previously suggested). That’s all for this week, folks.

Second Evolution.

Category: Gaming

This may be on the old news spectrum, but with there finally being some substantial updates to the sources, now is as good a time as ever to lay this one on the line.

There are currently plans to rerelease Star Ocean 2 (along with Star Ocean 1 — which has never seen the western world except with emulation) on the PSP. As luck would have it, Star Ocean: Second Evolution (its new title) has just put up a site.

It has redone graphics (with the only downside being the sprites are not really redone, just enhanced somewhat), slightly improved battle system, character faceplates during dialogue, new Private actions, and possibly new characters on top of the originals. Chisato still has not been announced, but this game still has a month or two before it sees Japan. The original was, indeed, a cult classic — this is proving to be even better still.

Current State of PS3.

Category: Gaming

I love the PS3.

I love that it has next to no worthwhile games, slim pickings on PSN, crappy weekly updates of said PSN that seem to elude all hopes and desires of its playerbase, an utter stranglehold on the RPG market with its three RPGs (Yes, Folklore is, for the last fucking time, an Action RPG) and a crapload of great exclusives which will eventually defect and become multiplatform (I’m lookin’ at you, Capcom).

Despite that laundry list, I still do support the PS3 wholeheartedly. I just wish that this recent victory in the HD format war wasn’t Sony’s chance to sit down and have a fucking victory tea party. Stop resting on your laurels — we still have a way to go. Keep putting on the pressure like you have been doing and stuffing the competition back behind you were they used to be. Put out more cult classics on PSN such as Resident Evil 2, Silent Hill, and especially Xenogears. No more goddamned Crash Bandicoot or Jet Moto. Yes, I know they are classics. But nobody is frothing at the fucking mouth over the next Crash game being put out into cyberspace.

You let Devil May Cry 4 go, you let Grand Theft Auto go (which, regardless, is unmitigated garbage which should stay elsewhere, but the ignorant masses tend to eat that garbage up), and you’re probably going to let something else go. At the very least I can look forward to the fact of the matter that Kojima feels the 360 is inferior.

Hang onto your exclusives. Because I love the PS3.

Vagrancy

Category: Gaming

This blog will (mostly) be a compendium of gaming thoughts, information, reviews, and just about anything else I damn well feel the need to subject anybody to. It may be a while, yet, before this gets off the ground. Bear with me.

It might just be a delectable morsel of brain food when it starts. So, in a while, enjoy. It’s why you’re here.
